The Otter that scared Cory! |
He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. Job 28:10 (NKJV)
We are on vacation at the Rainbow River. We decided to stay in Florida and a Florida vacation means only one thing to us, Rainbow River. We looked at a lot of places to rent on line before deciding upon Wood Duck Crossing because we could bring Cory with us. Yes, you are smitten with your dog when you chose your vacation place because you can take your dog! As we knew she would, she is having a blast. We barely got out of the truck before she was in the water. I think at first she thought it was the world’s biggest water bucket because she would drink a little and then, swim a little. On our first day here, both boys, youngest son’s wife and our niece were here as well as Summer. It was fun watching Summer and Cory chase the water toys. Summer usually won, but Cory gave her a run for it. We loaded up the kayaks, husband, me and Cory in a tandem, our niece in a single, youngest son’s wife on a paddle board and the boys and Summer in a canoe and headed up river. We are a lot farther down the river than where we used to stay, so it was a long haul up to the headsprings, but it is a family tradition to go there, tour the waterfalls and eat ice cream. Since youngest son and his wife would only be here one day, we had to go! Cory did great in the tandem kayak. I was so impressed with how nicely she rode even though it was a four hour trip. The next day did not go as well. I decided to try her in a single kayak with me. I do not know if it was because the single kayak was overloaded and unstable or that I was not a very good paddler, but Cory was very nervous and restless. She jumped out of the boat twice and turned us over once. Thankfully, some guys helped me turn over the kayak and get back in! Husband and I have been thinking about buying a kayak and our experience determined that we will not get a single kayak! (Husband thinks we need a boat with a motor on it!) Today, we spent most of the day just sitting down by the river, throwing the toys for Cory to retrieve and watching her enjoy the river. There was one point though that she was not interested at all in the river. Instead, she was focused on some squirrels in a pine tree. My water dog thought she was a squirrel hunter! The funniest part of the day was when an otter surfaced right near the dock and snorted at Cory. I thought she was going to faint! In the afternoon, we took the tandem kayak up the river and then, floated back down. Cory was great until the last half hour of the trip. Then, she got antsy again. We figured out why when we got back to the house. She jumped off the boat and immediately, went to the bathroom. For a long time! Every night, she is exhausted and falls into a sound sleep early. Husband and I are quick to follow her. It’s always a great vacation when we go over the rainbow and it’s even better with our squirrel dog/water dog/otter hunter dog!
