A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one. Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NLT)
Upon arriving in Baltimore, I immediately realized we had not planned enough time for our stay. Between the museums and aquarium, the walking tours and the harbor ferry, the parks and tall ships, you could stay a week in Baltimore and not get bored. But, we only had one day. Less because we arrived so late in the city. We had so many choices before us, but ended up walking to Patterson Park for festival celebrating the writing of the Star Spangled Banner and battles. Then, the morning we left, we took a long walk to Fell’s Point to see the harbor. The whole time I was in Baltimore, I felt like Caroline shadowed me. One hundred years ago next month, Caroline and Eliza visited Baltimore for three weeks. I don’t know why, but suspect that Eliza may have been a patient at John Hopkins Hospital. Previously, she traveled to Atlanta seeking medical care. As we walked around the city, I kept wondering if I was seeing things that Caroline had seen. Did she walk past this building? Did she take a boat from the harbor? Did she climb the hills of Patterson Park? We had to leave Baltimore by 11:00 as we had a long drive to Chincoteague Island where we would stay three days and fulfill a girlhood dream of seeing the wild ponies of Assateague Island depicted in the Marguerite Henry books that all young girls read and then, long for a horse of their own. But, I also wanted to go by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on our way. Again, there were a lot of things we could do on our drive, but having heard for ages about the wonders of the Maritime Museum, I chose to go there. We took a boat ride on the Chesapeake Bay, visited the lighthouse, boat shop and museum buildings. Making the choice to visit the museum meant we would not make it to the Bed and Breakfast by our check in time. Though I called and told them of our late arrival, I still felt rushed to get through the museum and get back on the road because we had a two hour drive ahead of us. We finally arrived in Chincoteague about 6:00 barely putting our bags down before heading out to dinner at a restaurant a few blocks away. We finished dinner just in time to catch the sunset from the pier overlooking Chesapeake Bay, walked to an ice cream store that makes homemade ice cream and fell into an exhausted sleep after all that walking and racing around. I saw a post on Facebook recently that said, “Choose how you will spend your time wisely. For every yes you say, there is a no to other things.” We have been making a lot of choices on how we spend our time while on vacation. It has meant missing some things that we might have enjoyed. So far, I think we have chosen wisely.
